SARANDIS
KARAVOUZIS (1938-2011)
Born in Athens, Sarandis
Karavouzis studied
painting (1959-1963) and fresco (1965-1966) at the School of Fine Arts
with Yannis Moralis.
With state scholarship he
traveled all over Greece in order to study the Greek art from the
antiquity until today (1966-1967).
Subsequently, with a scholarship from the French government he
continued his studies in Paris at the École Nationale des Beaux
Arts (1967-1968), the École Pratique des Hautes
Études in Sorbonne
(1969-1972) and the École du Louvre
(1972-1974). At the same time he was engaged in stage
scenery designing
and the illustration of books
and in 1966 he taught design at
the Center for Technological Applications, Athens.
In
1971 he presented his
first one-man exhibition in Athens. A series of
other solo and group shows in Greece and abroad followed. He was awarded with the Drouant-Cartier
Prize
(1984) for the totality of his work. A diffuse
lyric atmosphere exists in his work which places it at the area of
magic realism. Since 1967 he was permanently settled in Paris.
Sarandis
Karavouzis passed away in Athens (2011).
