HOUSE
At
Kastro
The
Cangelaris summer residence
at the village of Kastro in Cephalonia was build in 1990 behind the
church of Our Lady of the Annunciation on land purchased by Panayotis
D. Cangelaris at 1986, almost ninety years since
his great
grand father Dimitri had sold their house at the quarter of Our Lady of
the Revelation.
The Fortress of
Saint George together with its namesake the Suburb was the capital of
Cephalonia until 1757, when the seat of the government was transferred
to Argostoli. The eldest known record of a house purchase at
Kastro by a member of the Cangelari family dates back to the year
1568, while this particular branch settled there permanently in 1755.
It is not an
exaggeration to mention that due to its plain line, the particular
attention to the detail and the deep respect for the Ionian Islands'
architectural tradition, this house has become a reference as a
characteristic specimen of revival of the old Cephalonian mansion in
post-earthquake Cephalonia.
