YANNIS

Born at Pylos
(Peloponnese), Yannis
Spiropoulos studied at the School of Fine Arts, Athens (1933-1938) with
Unbertos Argyros, Spiros Vikatos and Epaminondas Thomopoulos and then
went to Paris where he completed his studies at the
École des Beaux
Arts and at a number of open Academies (1938-1940).
Since 1950 he organized
many solo exhibitions in Greece and
abroad.
He participated to many group shows as
well, including all Pan-Hellenic and the
Biennales of
Alexandria, Venice and Sao Paolo. In
1960
he won the UNESCO Award at the Biennale of Venice and in 1978 he got
the Gottfried von Herder Prize of the University of Vienna. He was named Commander of the
Royal Order of Phoenix (1966). He
bequeathed his house at the suburb of Athens, Ekali, which since 1990
functions as a museum. This specific
painting belongs to the abstract period of his work, which due to his
personal style has placed him as leading representative of abstract
painting in Greece. Yannis Spiropoulos passed away in Athens
