  DIMOSTHENIS KOKINIDIS (1929-2020)

Born at Piraeus, Dimosthenis Kokinidis studied in 1950 and for two years at the School for Economic and Commercial Sciences, Athens and in 1952 he entered the School of Fine Arts, where he studied painting until 1958 with Yannis Moralis and Spiros Papaloukas.  He continued his studies with a two years scholarship of the Italian government and in 1972 with another of the Ford Foundation.  He presented his work in Greece and abroad and had his first one-man exhibition in the island of Hydra (1962).  From 1960 to 1967 he participated at the activities of the "Art Group I" for the promotion of art at the general public, an effort continued after 1974 with a different perception by the "Group for the Communication and Education in Art".  Since 1976 he was Professor in the School of Fine Arts, where he taught painting until 1997 and was elected Dean of the School for the years 1980-1982.  At the same time he published a series of articles and studies on art subjects.  At his work abstract expressionism and lyric representation coexist in order to formulate a distinct personal idiom.  Dimosthenis Kokinidis passed away in Athens (2020).
