GIORGOS IOANNOU (1926-2017)

Born in Athens, Giorgos Ioannou studied painting and etching in Athens with Kostas Iliadis and Thedoros Drossos and in Paris, at the Académie Julian and the Ateliers Penture - Dessin of Claude Schurr and Mac' Avoy.  He had his first one-man exhibition in Athens (1959).  Other solo and group shows followed in Greece and abroad including Pan-Hellenic exhibitions and the Biennale of Venice.  He had organized a solo exhibition on board of paquebot "Olympia".  His work has been awarded with prizes from the City of Oestand (1968), the II Biennale delle Regioni and the Europa Arte in Italy.  In 2012 he was awarded by the Academy of Athens for the totality of his art creation.  A personal style characterizes his work, which belongs to the pop-art and comics and bears a distinct critical objectivity.  Giorgos Ioannou passed away in Athens (2017).
