CHRISTOS CARAS (1930-2023)

Born at Trikala (Thessaly), Christos Caras studied Political Sciences at the Panteios School (1948-1950).  He continued at the School of Fine Arts (1951-1955) with painting and fresco by Yannis Moralis and Andreas Georgiadis and sculpture with Yannis Pappas.  He later moved to Paris with a state scholarship (1957-1960), where he studied fresco at the École des Beaux Arts.  In 1973 he went to New York, where he worked for two years with a Ford Foundation scholarship.  His first one-man exhibition took place in Athens (1961), but he participated in group exhibitions already since 1958. Other solo and group shows in Greece and abroad followed.  In 1963, he founded with other Greek artists the Group "Tomi" (Incision) and in 1976 the "Greek Artists League".  He also contributed in the organization of art and cultural conferences and symposia  (1963, 1977, 1981).  His work moves in the abstract and surrealist area or even beyond that. Christos Caras passed away in Athens (2023).
