  CHRYSSA (VARDEA) (1933-2013)

Born in Athens, Chryssa (Vardea) studied in Paris at the Grande Chaumière Academy (1953-1954) and from 1954 to 1955 continued her studies in the California School of Fine Art, San Francisco.  In 1957 she settled in New York, where she had her first one-woman show (1961).  Other followed both abroad and in Athens.  Since 1960, however, she participated in group exhibitions both in New York and other U.S., European and Latin American cities.  Although more renown for her neon light (luminist) sculptures, her painting with intense minimalist and geometric characteristics is equally pioneering. Chryssa (Vardea) passed away in Athens (2013).
